Maximizing Ergonomics and Productivity for Laptop Users

by C. Sumner

Laptop computers provide incredible flexibility, but they were designed to be compact and portable; they were not designed to be ergonomic. Long term use can take its toll on your body. When using your laptop, you need to evaluate your work space in order to maximize comfort and productivity.

Whenever you use a computer, your goal should be to maintain a neutral sitting position. This position reduces the strain on your muscles caused from sitting and typing for long periods of time. This position is not possible on a laptop computer; however, a few peripheral items can make a significant difference. There are three main areas that can help encourage good posture while using a laptop.

Keyboard: For a neutral position, the keyboard should rest just below the height of your elbows and the keys should slope downward slightly away from you, so that your hands can remain in a relaxed position even when reaching for the top keys. By using a separate, wireless mini keyboard with your laptop, you have the flexibility to place the keyboard wherever you can to create a comfortable typing position.

Chair: Next adjust your chair. Your feet should firmly touch the floor, without pressure behind the knees. You also need sufficient lumbar support in the back rest. A neutral position allows the muscles in your back, arms, and shoulders to relax while you type. If you need additional back support, consider finding adjustable lumbar support, or a portable back rest for use when you travel. A rolled up towel can give you a temporary quick fix for back support.

Monitor: To create the best position for your neck, your computer screen should be directly in front of you and at eye-level, so that you can clearly see it without bending you neck. With a laptop you will probably need a shelf or lift to raise the screen to the necessary height. In a tight spot, a phone book might give just enough lift.

By making a few changes to your work space - a mini keyboard, a monitor shelf, and adjustable lumbar support - you can encourage good posture even while working on a laptop. These three areas are key in providing a healthy, productive experience for any laptop user.
